Greetings all.

I am returning after being away for quite a few years now.

Things have changed quite a bit since I was here and I have been reading through some of the forums. I see there is a Friday Night Series but today I found an alternate to the Friday Night Series. It was not clear to me how to participate in this. The Friday Night Series is well documented and listed in the races but not the alternate.

If someone could explain this it would be very much appreciated.

Hi Grahame

Welcome back, indeed Liveskipper has improved dramatically over the last years. Hope you enjoy it even more now.

your compatriate is a frequent sailor in the AFR (alternative FR) sailing races, Mike from NS, though he sails his spare boat A Skier Sailing in the AFR.

the AFR (as well as the AAFR, if you miss the AFR ) or the AAAFR if you are so unfortunate to having missed the FR , AFR and AAFR, are all Sailing Races organised with the intention to give sailors an early or mid-week race opposite the FR races that always start on the Friday (local time) .

The route for the AFR, etc aa's... is made by one of the fanatic and enthusiast participants sailing on para......, or golf......... or the ............hall......, skippers and most of the time it is far more challenging, adventurous at times. Friendships in these alternative races is overwhelming , there is a hard battle at times as well , though.

You can find the R.I. for AFR here http://www.liveskipper.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6073&start=2400 ; standard starting time Sundays 1100 GMT
and for AAFR here http://www.liveskipper.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6449&start=1500 ; normally starts at 1500 gmt
and for AAAFR here, http://www.liveskipper.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7795&start=180 normally starts on wednesdays 1200 gmt{there is still time to start this one in time on this Wednesday 5th at 1200 GMT}
follow these instructions carefully and you have a good chance on the Podium, as too many of the alternative sailors miss essential route elements and get dsq'ed Rolling Eyes

Now the tricky part of participating is the Boat choice Exclamation
In LS, only one Boat can participate in a race and finish it. So if you would sail the official FR and finish, that boat is frozen for that race. No worry, for each problem there is a solution.

You can create a 2nd boat for the Alternative races (and a 3rd.... if you like) . You do need a 2nd email address (well these are given away free at each street corner) and you can register your adventures alternative boat.

The ranking for the alternative races is normally registered in the LS ranking and on top of that there is the status for trending classification available https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqID9t_vjsAZdEtGQVo1bXp4Ul9maGtCanNoYnhDVFE&usp=sharing

feel free to join us tomorrow at the start in the Canary islands to sail to Madeira, Madeiry my dear. Laughing If you would have problems starting the race , there is always the possibility to start a race late by going the the topic of the official race and click the "play" link.

any questions Question ASK Exclamation

Hi Suratna,

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate the links to the alternate races though I did see those earlier today. My question is how do I join a race that is not listed on the race page?

I understand about the boat being locked. Good explanation!

Looks like Mon at 1500GMT works best for me as I am -7 hours. Will see if I can get up for 0500 my time for Wed at 1200GMT.

Thank you again.

A FR is listed in the race Page till roughly Sunday after the start on a Friday. After that the race is not longer shown, but still open for registering, starting and sailing.

You have to open the topic in the Forum on the official FR and in the 1st post you will find a link "Play". This link will even after the official closing of a race, allow you to register a boat.

Be aware that the FR has started already. The same moment you touch either Heading or Sail of your boat , the Boat will start sailing.
So register and indicate your category only; we only appreciate real sailors that sail in the Passion category Smile

to start you :
-either, be at the keyboard at the AFR's starting time and hoist the anchor or set the sail to get sailing. (your start signal has to be set between 15:00 and 15:09 gmt to have your boat start sailing at the 15:00 gmt time. )
-or you set a "dynamic anchor" that allows an auto-start of your boat at the time set , the method is described in the wiki (something new, as you have some years not sailed in LS) http://www.liveskipper.com/wiki/doku.php?id=en:faq:game#what_is_an_auto_start

if your boat starts by accident too early, there are some options to reset it for a start in time.
-You may go to the page with races information, click for the selected race the Abort button; after which you can with Join make a new fresh start. Or you might be trying to sail back to the starting location and anchor your boat for a start in time.
-If your boat starts too late, well, that is just bad luck and you will have to sail faster to catch up Rolling Eyes

I hope You can join us in a coming AFR, or AAFR and if you have a question Question ASK Exclamation

Welcome back Grahame Wink

My Main Race boat is Hallberg.

Baldrick in the AFR's - 1100GMT Sundays
CplHallberg in the AAFR's - 1500GMT Mondays
Hallberg2 in the AAAFR's - 1200GMT wednesdays..

We take the official FR as a template and throw in a few interesting extra gates Laughing

If you follow Suratna's guidance (the inventor of the auto start) and practice, you can set your boat off anytime...

Hope to see you out there........Russ.

Thanks again for the reply Suratna. Understood.

Thanks for the welcome Kingfisher and Hallberg.

Hallberg, I do not recognize your boat name but back circa 2007 there was a Russ that was very prominent in the forums. Perhaps, you are the same one? I also recognize the boat name Falconbe from back then.

Regards,

Grahame

So just to announce, I will be sailing 2 boats wrt to the FR, AFR...

They are:

Thanks to all for the welcome back. I have missed LS and am very happy to be back.
