Hi LS skippers

Just now I read the sad story of LiveSkipper to finish in a month time.

I want to make this topic with some information on alternative Virtual Sailing sites. I keep it in the announcement with updates for my findings and your comments made always in the 1e post; as reference.

I hope some acceptable alternatives can be found and maybe we can make a kind of LS club in another virtual sailing site.

ALTERNATIVES

Virtual Regatta (VR) - https://www.virtualregatta.com/
I hate this site, as it behaves very arrogant towards skippers and is very much dedicated to the French skippers.
others may give some features, characteristics and info

Sailonline - http://sailonline.org/
This is a nice Virtual Sailing site, though it lacks some easy of sailing and features compared to LS.
I have it working in Chromium and Brave, but can not get it working (yet) in Firefox.
Sailonline has a clear map to sail on. The boat is a small 2 dimensional silhouette. The route can be set by click on navigation buttion and point to the desired heading. A polor will show up and you can set either auto-heading or TWA. It shows the course for next 6 hrs (I believe) . You can set a scheduler with heading changes at per time indicated. There is a kind of ruler, though features are limited.
It has a clear visible chatroom, but sofar could not find a forum. There are a number of languages in the chatroom available. English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portuguse, Italian, Turkey. or Sailtalk only.
It is FREE Exclamation , and donations are welcome
For me this could be a good alternative.

Regattagame - http://51.15.174.110/rg/rg2.0/
Just today , opened the site and started a first challenge. Difficutll start but will explore
First impression is that the map uses only a small part of the screen.
I have some problems with some pages, errors and thus cannot reach forum nor manual. ???

New Updated versioin regattagame
It is far better now, with the complete screen used for the race map. Once you get used to the block winds (winds are stable for 12 hrs in each block, like LS was in the early days Rolling Eyes ) it is nice to sail this virtual sailing game.
With the scheduler and the stable winds for 12 hours, you could set the marks in two settings per day and stay relatively close to the leaders. Optimal for European sailors as the start of the races seems always to be 2000 French time, and also the wind updates come at 800 and 2000 French time.

To get the new upgraded version, you have to click the proper start button on the login page as the old version is also still working alongside.

Virtual Loup de Mer (VLM) -https://v-l-m.org
It's a web-based real-time Sailboat-routing simulation, virtual sailing game . It uses real weather data (data for wind strength and direction are updated every 6 hours - GMT 3h40, 9h40, 15h40 & 21h40). GRIB file is available here: http://grib.v-l-m.org/ GRIB files contains wind info in 3hour steps and 0.5° grid and is interpolated to be used in the game. Boat polar charts are similar to real boats, boat speed and direction are updated every 5 minutes (or less in some very short races). Races will be organised frequently.
In the navigation bar on the left, you will find links toward VLM documentation : Documentation and tools associated with VLM : Tools
As well as links toward the Forum (hosted by La Taverne) or the Chat
For me, this is a rather complicated Virtual Sailing set, not a favorite of mine. The features and precision for sailing however are great
The map is in a sepatate tab from the controls,
There is a Forum, be it that is again sits on another website.
Different Languages are supported.

Virtual Loup de Mer beta (VLM)[/b] -https://v-l-m.org/jvlm/
- Vlm just got an upgrade though still in beta, however this upgrade makes the vlm game a lot more user friendly , will check out more.

qtVlm - https://www.meltemus.com/index.php/en/
I stillhave to explore this, but it is a further development from VLM, far more user friendly. It also can be used as grib file reader.
This is not a virtual sailing game, but rather a navigation and weather routing software. It can be used as router and grib file reader.

Sailaway - https://sailaway.world/
This is a rather new Sailing Boat virtualization. It is program you have to download and install on your computer, table or phone and can be purchased from its Website: SailAway.
I tried it out and find it difficult to navigate, for sure if you want to sail around the clock with poor scheduling options; be at the helm to enjoy SailAway.
Sailaway, gives real life sailing experience, with a lot of manual handling to make the boat sailing and many options for trimming the different sails. You have to pull the hallyard to hoist the sails, pull the sheets to tighten the sails, etc. It does claim to also include currents into the game.

I think there are a few reasons why enthusiasts dislike VR. For me it was not the game itself ( i could cope with that). It was their sole interest in money, and bribing real race website organizers, to allow them to affiliate races with real races. Thus pushing the likes of LS who could not afford it, out of several affiliate races. VR are not interested in the enthusiast , but just money.

I tried this, but did not do it for me - plus the interface is in flash player, which is one of the reasons why LS is going

I have started this one. The site is in it's infancy, but i the programmers are enthusiasts. The use of the marks can take a little getting used to, but if you ask; you will see it is easy to do. There are very few gimmicks, there could be improvements, but is seems like it is more of a group participation than an individual.

I found this a little complicated a while ago, maybe it has changed ? I prefer to be able to change the sailing parameters on the same map screen as the boats are on.

Just my thoughts.

cheers

Glenn

Sailonline are currently testing a new HTML5 client. It will function relatively similar to the current Flash client, but with many small improvements. I encourage you all to try a couple races on sailonline.org and be reassured that there will be a new client soon that is non-flash, modern HTML5, but not too different from the Flash client you just started to get used to Very Happy

thanks Andres

to logon the regattagame (rg) Forum, you will have to use the name of your Boat.

Regattagame has also upgraded to anew version in the last day.
see

sorry to publish this on LS but that is because of the coming closure

More likely that I will continue regattagame next month , with my boat Paradise. You may join me.

Glenn, as if the game owners have heard you. The new version is out and now indeed you can change the headings, autopilot etc. in the same screen as the map. This makes VLM (virtual loup de mer) a lot better, though it still is not that easy to get to know the game . Scheduler is tricky and I did miss out several times, leading to groundings.

Hi,
In Vlm you can also control your boat with free and external tools, like QtVlm (also used by real skippers in real sailing, available on Windows, Linux, Android and Ios). It's looking quite nice, as you can see on my screenshoot, and, after a short learning time, the transition from LS is easy. All is possible on a single screen and winds are interpolated, as on LS...

Cheers,

Rolland

Virtual Loup de Mer (VLM) is getting a little complicated.

the original virtual sailing game was VLM, https://v-l-m.org/index.php
it exist a long time already, but had a terrible interface. The Boat handling and navigation, sailing info was on one screen and the map on another screen. scrollilng was not possible, you have to go back to one screen to reset the parameters for scale, not easy to sail and time consuming.

They must have realised this and have made a new version VLM-Beta still in beta, https://v-l-m.org/jvlm/. This is far better as boat handling, navigation and maps are in one screen and you can also zoom in on the map. Fantastic improvement. It offers only one sail, so a little less strategic game than LS. There is a mode VBVMG that almost does all the sailing for you, admitted it is not giving you the Podium as it seems not to be the fastest mode.

Both VLM and VLM-Beta do consist next to each other, play the same saililng races and registering in VLM will allow you sailing also in VLM-Beta. I think that with time the Beta will become the new and only version.

Than there is qtvlm, as far as I know not directly related to vlm. https://www.meltemus.com/index.php/en/. Here you can download a virtual sailing program that is detailed and difficult to use. qtvlm is running on your computer and not in a browser. It can be used as router and grib file reader and seems to be used by professional sailors as well.

as I am not in favor of using routers, or sailing against skippers that do use a router, the qtvllm is not an option for me. VLM has however also an almost automatic mode, VBVMG, though using this will let you sail it is far from the fastest sailing option.
