How does the Overall Ranking work?

- the overall ranking is based on the 10 most recent races
- each player ranked in a race earns ranking points depending on his place
- the player who has the most points is the #1 player in the Overall Ranking
- the friday races do not count in this calculation

Points earned depending on the rank

The points are computed in three steps:
- the rank is adjusted depending on the number of player on the start line
- base points = functionOf(rank)
- race points = base points x race difficulty

Base points

The player ranked #1 earns 1000 points.
The player ranked #2 earns 940 points.
and so on...

RANK : POINTS
0001: 1000
0002: 940
0003: 895
0004: 860
0005: 830
0006: 803
0007: 780
0008: 759
0009: 740
0010: 722
0012: 690
0020: 592
0030: 509
0050: 400
0100: 257
0200: 137
0300: 85
0500: 40
1000: 10

The exact formula is:
0.86 power (squareRoot(ranking) - 1) * 1000 points

For instance, if you are ranked #4,
base points = 0.86 power (sqrt(4)-1) * 1000
base points = 0.86 power (1) * 1000
base points = 0.86 * 1000 = 860

Race difficulty
Some races are longer that others. In the race instructions document, you will find the race difficulty value. A very short race (like a friday race) with a difficulty value of 1 will give 1000 points (minimum) to the player ranked #1. A very long race (like Vendee Globe) with a difficulty value of 5 will give 5000 points (maximum).

Number of people in the race
This is the difficult part.
We think it is not fair that a player who arrives 300th out of 10000 boats earns as many points as a player who arrives 300th of 350 boats.

This is why the ranking is "normalized" to always fit a range between 1 and 1000.

For instance, arriving 300 out of 300 is like arriving 1000 on 1000.
In the other way, arriving 100 out of 10000 is like arriving 10 out of 1000.

If you are really interested, here is the exact formula:
normalizedRanking = 1 + ((ranking - 1) x 999) / (nbPlayer-1)

Once you have a normalized ranking, you want to compute the "base points", and then multiply by race difficulty value.

Hi, I think it is all clear.

Only one question:
The normalized ranking is function of the number of skippers, when does the number stop to grow?

It is the number of boats on the start line when the race starts.
I agree that it is not perfectly accurate, but it doesn't matter. Small variations would have little to no influence on the final calculation.

Good evening Denosya Laughing ,
All formulas seems very clearly.
But in formula regarding "normalizedRanking" should be 9999 or 999 Confused?

Best regards
Andrzej
PS. I am sorry but I don't know which topic is active in this case Embarassed .

Edit (Denosya): the 999 value is fixed now

Am I correct in my supposition that the Overall Ranking includes points for races that you are still competing in?

It seems odd to do it that way as the ranking bounces up and down as the various strategies in the fleet play themselves out. Or is it too difficult to only include completed races?

There would be no difficulty. This is just that we like the top ladder moving according to the ongoing races. We find it fun. Maybe some day we can change that.

Hi,

there are some place in the web where we can find the number of skippers taken to calculate the race points? Could you add a column in the ranking page with the points (live data) for every race?

By the way, owerall ranking is a good idea. But I have one doubt. What happens when one abandon the race aborting it? Is mandatory finish races when for any reason you go to the last places or when somenone will be unable to attend his boat and run aground several days?

Thank you, Smile Smile

When we have some time, we will display the estimated number of points earned (and also xp) within the game, in real time.

Hallo, this is good news for the EF sailors on FR Laughing

I have worked out the formula and added a column "earned points" on the far right for each of the last two friday races.
Melbourne https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AqID9t_vjsAZdF9fUnRCYjFlVmh2YkFndUg4WlkyV2c&hl=en_GB&authkey=CKCcuNsF

Vigo https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AqID9t_vjsAZdFdFV1NLbFVIZHZFY0JyVjBrOVd6Rnc&hl=en_GB&authkey=CPbF0bsD
your total you can find back on the Homepage already Laughing
Note: this is an approximation , calibrated with the details of myself, as I do not know the number of participating boats exactly, however differences should not be more then 1 or 2

From now on this will be included on all FR stats for EF sailors Laughing
Still thinking on something for the Overall Races Rolling Eyes

CU in FR S3-3 in a couple of hours Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hallo Tulip

The ranking shown in the Japan Xtra race as you say 466, is the ranking of your boat in this individual race. Where the winner gets ranking 1 , the runner-up ranking 2 and so forth. So you are the 466th boat in the progress of the race.

The reason that your rank is that high, compared to NZL Seacret: 259 is ,....
You have missed Kunashiri gate ; by the thickness of a hair you passed the Western buoy on the West side Embarassed Now your ranking will be just below the ranking of the last boat that has passed this gate and decreasing with the growing number of boats passing the gate. The rules of LS say that you will not be classified if you do not validate all gates.

You might be confused by the LS OVERALL Ranking, which awards points to the finishing boats on the last 10 races, not the FR races and not challenges.
In this overall ranking the boats on top get the maximum points according some difficult formulas that Ino kindly has explained in previous posts in this same topic.
For your comfort , I now also put the earned race points in the tables I make for the FR races; as there is also a ranking for all FR races in a season. All on the right side, you will see this. But not for the Big Races, yet.
But for the Kangaroo race Tulip is ranked 301 in this race , which will earn her 19 points for the Overall Ranking.
For the Japan race I did a quick and dirty calculation and your present ranking in this race would earn you 40 points; the winner gets 4000 points (1000 for being 1st and with a difficulty factor 4 for this race it gets multiplied till 4000)

I hope I made it a little clear, if not ask me the questions in PM or in the forum.
