In the SOUTHERN hemisphere:
The race instructions tell us that 'at least one point of the gate must be left at the south of your course'.
This simply means that each boat must been seen (during at least 1 course refresh (10 minutes)) at the NORTH of the gate, this between the longitudes of the east- and the westside of the gate.
You, thus, can pass the gates in the 4 ways as in the drawing below.
Some will choose not to cross the gates and thus stay north of it over the whole length, this will make them sail a longer course, that's all.

WEST--------------------------------------------------------------------EAST

All the other type of gates MUST BE CROSSED

For the NORTHERN hemisphere: Same principle, but at least 1 point of the gate must be left at the NORTH of your course. Means that at a moment ( 10 minute update ) you must be seen at the SOUTH of the gate between the west and the east longitude of the gate.
The drawing must then be turned upside down!

I am in the middle of the Jules Verne - Really enjoying it and I think if you follow the weather patterns then you would be silly not to cross the gate as you pink up more speed going in and coming out Cool Cool

I just passed gate 5 Cape horn here I come Laughing Laughing Laughing

Its a thrilling race with heaps of sail changes for the changing winds Well Done guys.
