Sails

LiveSkipper offers on Boats usually between 4 and 5 different type of Sails. Each Boat has its own set of sails, and therefore proposes a different style of sailing. You have to select the sails which suits your need for heading and boat-speed the best; this may take some time to learn to optimize. The performance of a sail depends on two parameters:

  • the wind angle: the angle between wind direction and heading of the boat
  • the wind speed

The Polar diagrams show the performance of each sail on the boat proper for different headings and wind-conditions. The Polar projections show this performance over time in the Game. The games shows the polar projections instantly for easily comparing of the performance of the different sails. You can change the sail using the sail switch on the dashboard .

Auto Sail

The boats also come with a special sail called Auto . This sail is a combination from the other sails, to behave globally as the best sail for changing wind situation. However, a penalty is applied so that it is less efficient than the individual types of sails in most wind situations; thus offering lower boats-speed. This Auto-sail is the only sail used in the beginner mode, but it is also available as an option in advanced mode. It allows you not to worry about changing a sail depending on wind-shifts. The penalty, however, keeps it interesting to adjust manually to the best sail give the wind conditions for the best performance; be it that for some minor situations the Auto Sail even can become the fastest Sail(so in checking the fastest sail, don't overlook the Auto Sail.)
