Virtual Sailing

My boat

At the Start of the game, the view is centered on the player's boat. The dashboard provides the basic information for the boat:

  • the boat's heading
  • the boat's speed
  • the wind direction
  • the wind speed
  • the True Wind Angle (TWA)
  • the selected sail
  • an indicator for Auto Heading
  • By clicking on My Boat,(or any Mark indicated) the screen will center on Your Boat(or the Mark indicated).

Performance

A sailing boat uses the wind as the energy source for its movements. In LiveSkipper, the boat speed depends on four things:

  • the type of boat, a small boat and a maxi trimaran do not behave the same way
  • the wind in which the boat sails, both its strength and direction
  • the sail used, each sail with its different characteristics
  • the heading selected for the Boat

In reality there would be other elements impacting the movement of the boat, such as currents, waves etc.. ; but these elements are not active in LiveSkipper.

There are two main controls for sailing your boat: selected heading and selected sail. Wind depends on the weather and your position at any given time.

Starting a Race or Challenge

Once the boat is registered for a Race, you must adjust its basic controls to start the sailing. When you registered the boat before the official starting time of a Race or Challenge, you may set the basic controls already, but these will only be activated after the starting time of the Race; we call this the automatic Start setting.  The first setting should include an adjustment of heading and sail type. When you register the boat after the Race has been started or a Challenge that is opened, the setting of Heading or Sail will start the movement of your Sailing Boat.

Movement of the Sailing boat

In LiveSkipper, the Boats are moved every 10 minutes after a re-calculation in the LiveSkipper servers. To view the movement on the screen, You have to refresh the screen with the icon on the top or via a refresh of the browser.  You can read the article about the movement of boats for more details.

Starting a Cruise

A Cruise can be started by an individual Boat or a group of Boats, preferably using an existing Challenge in LiveSkipper. Reason is that Challenges are longer available as Race on the LiveSkipper Calender. The Skipper or group of Skippers have to start at an agreed time from the official Starting Location of the Challenge. You may sail the Cruise in a Challenge as long as you like and to locations ALL over the Waters of the World, as long as you can reach it, however if You pass the official Finishing line of the Challenge, in a proper manner, your Cruise is over.
