Except for MaxSEA or the real Deckman software that people are using. That costs $1500+ USD!!

I don't believe maxsea helps a lot...

The game winds are too different...
And our computers aren't free too, I know!!!

But you surely understood what I mean...

right...
but all of these things... the polars, maxsea, deckman do not do anything that you couldn't in theory do yourself with a map, and a pencil .

An autopilot is more than that.

I voted for autopilot - this would enable us to have a life and get some sleep.

My next preference would be to improve the polars.

Last on my list is the weather. The idea of not just predicting, but KNOWING the weather for the next 24 (or even 2) hours is just too far from reality.

Maxsea, deckman and other tools all save time in doing a manual task.
So does a autopilot - it is not magic - just would save time and allow us to have a life! It just does what we all do manualy - click that crazy compass Smile

And then there are boats skippered by many people? Or people that do not work and can play all day? Or those with indsider knowledge of the system. Does it really matter? Not really. We are all playing navigator here. So lets enjoy it.

In real life think of all of the innovation. Code0, Fin Keels, Carbon fibre, canting keels. Are they cheats? Using something illegal?

Don't ban innovation. Get involved and stay positive.

But don't ban free speech!

OK - So you plan your course with whatever method you choose to use.
They may tell you you have to adjust your course every 20-30 minutes by one degree to stay in the sweet spot, but they don't sit up all day and night checking the wind and adjust your course for you. That is what an autopilot does. That's why it's called an autopilot! There is an enormous difference!

er.. no - I don't see the connection. Again - if we don't all have access to the same stuff - that is not fair. I know that not everybody thinks like that!

And why do you mention free speech?

I vote for more accurate weather update system. In real lifer there is a rhythm to the weather as in the ocean swells and waves. The weather and the winds are in constant flux, but there is a flow to the movement of the high and low pressure systems. Once you addjust to that rhythm, you have a feel for where the wind is going to be the next hour, the next 12 hours, and the next day. High and low pressure systems do not jump a hundred or a thousand miles from one minute to the next. Without a proper wind update system having an auto-pilot (wind-vane) would be useless. It would be nice to have more realistic sail polars, but as everyone has the same (unlike in real boats which though conforming to class rules have slightly different polars depending on rig and sail cut) polars this I can play with.
An auto-pilot (wind-vane) would be last on my list.

Nilguiri, someone mentioned that the French nextdoor locked a similar subject, hence free speech.

Glad to see autopilot is winning with a great majority! I think it will greatly improve the game and give everyone a little break. Most people are now living their lives in 9 minute segments between updates I think. Very Happy

Sorry Jack, but I completely disagree.

An autopilot will keep you in the sweet spot so that you can go out for a few hours without having someone to watch your back or sleep at night without setting the alarm. That does much more for the game than nightly updates. And it is a little easy to say for you, as you have people covering your back all day. A lot of people do not have that luxury.

I know for a fact that you, Chris, Dennis and that group of people close together and ranked around 100 but far behind the leaders miss a lot of shifts. That is the reason you are behind and not the messy grib updates. That, everyone has to deal with and sometimes you loose, sometimes you gain.

Well said, voodoo.

I was reading the 'wind issue' posts since a while, and I didn't understand it when it was started, I still don't understand it today.
In the real world, predictions such as gribs, are predections only. Sometimes they match, rather often they don't.
Why must they be accurately match in this game?
With a wind vane type of auto pilot one might still need to get up in the night, to see if predicted wind shifts come or not, or for difficult passages such as NZ (where you didn't know where land and water bordered Sad )
However it would ease our lives, that's why I voted for it.

Can't we just have it all! Weather and Autopilot and Polars!

Most likey we will get none! Smile But maybe for the next game. I think they are too scared to touch the system apart from critical bugs. Rolling Eyes

I totally agree.
The only wind issue is a bit low resolution but thats no big problem at all.

isn't this about having fun? sometimes i get the impression there are huge amounts of money to win with this. i'm having the time of my life with this game, never having sailed before and doing this just on my gut feeling (don't understand the polar sheet you sent me Fabrice, sorry). My vote goes to nothing in this. What i would like is to be able to give in the heading i want numerically instead of clicking on the rose. But that option is obiously not on the table at the moment.

have good winds all and more importantly: have fun!!
